Barber described her youth as “playing every sport that I could get involved in,” accurately describing the early athletic careers of many fellow CrossFit participants. After playing two years of soccer at the University of Dayton, Barber eventually got involved in CrossFit. After collapsing during a workout, an MRI revealed she had three spinal conditions: scoliosis, spina bifida, and a fractured L5 vertebra (spondylolisthesis). Though told she would never compete again, Barber fought her way back and has now competed in multiple CrossFit Games.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Less than 10 seconds separated Sarah Robles from a personal goal and a historic performance. That was her coach’s message to her heading into her final lift on Sunday at Riocentro - Pavilion 2.

“I said to her, ‘Do you want to be on the medal stand? This is your opportunity,’” said Tim Swords, Robles’ coach. “’This is five seconds against the rest of your life.’ I said, ‘What do you want to do?’ You gotta bring it now, and you gotta go for it. Just five seconds of your life. This is going to change your life. Five seconds.’”

A lift of 160 kg. after five grueling lifts, each one heavier than the last, gave Robles her first Olympic medal, a bronze in the +75 kg. weight class. It was Team’s USA first medal in women’s weightlifting in 16 years.

Robles lifted a combined 286 kg., including 126 kg. in the snatch and 160 kg. in the clean and jerk. She finished 21 kg. behind China’s Suping Meng, who took home the gold medal.

Traveling extensively in his youth as part of a military family, Smith was forced to adapt to numerous new environments. He used his natural athleticism to learn new sports, which proved to be a useful skill when he discovered CrossFit. Since Smith began competing in 2009, he’s been a metronome of consistency, making it to every CrossFit Games. In 2015, he won the CrossFit Games individual competition, and has placed in the top-10 on five other occasions.

Smith is an athlete who was ideally suited to make the conversion to CrossFit. He accumulated eight years of experience in gymnastics, as well as years of track and field, swimming and volleyball (where he competed collegiately for a season). On top of competing individually in CrossFit, he’s been in the NPGL as well. Smith is also a coach at his family’s gym in Virginia.

Iceland Annie, aka Thor’s Daughter, aka the Fittest Woman on Earth twice running. The only female in CrossFit history to win the Games twice. Training upwards of 4 hours a day, 6 days a week, Annie might possibly be the baddest of them all. On top of Crossfit, the 24-year-old trained as a gymnast for 8 years, a pole vaulter for 2 years, and even as a ballet dancer.

Annie missed the 2013 CrossFit Games due to injury, but is sure to return with a vengeance in 2014.
